International Youth Day

International Youth Day

On 12 August we celebrate International Youth Day. It was declared by the United Nations, in accordance with the recommendations of the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth, in December 1999.

Why do we celebrate it?

This day aims to acknowledge the role of young people as a fundamental pillar of society; to state their problems and challenges and exalt their achievements.

Campaigns are carried out worldwide to raise public and governmental awareness  about the younger generation needs and give them voice. And this is what Proder is standing for, we are working with and for youth every day.

How do we celebrate International Youth Day?

To do so, every year a theme is chosen to be approached. From addressing health and unemployment (2001) to poverty eradication, and sustainable consumption and production (2016). This year’s theme is Transforming Food Systems; where youth need to innovate and address the challenge of sustaining population, since it is estimated that in the next 30 years inhabitants of the world will increase by 2 billion.

This is the main topic, but at the same time other issues such as healthcare, climate change, social inclusion will be discussed during this day.

Through these activities organized mostly by and for young people, it is shown that global success isn’t possible without the active participation of youth. In addition, this group of persons, aged 10-25, are actually 1.8 billion, which is the largest one in history.
