EUROPEAN MOBILITY WEEK – 16/22 September

Since 2002, EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK has sought to improve public health and quality of life through promoting clean mobility and sustainable urban transport. The campaign gives people the chance to explore the role of city streets. Moreover the chance to experiment with practical solutions to tackle urban challenges, such as air pollution.

European Mobility Week (shortened as EMW) is an annual initiative of the European Commission for Sustainable Urban Mobility since 2002. It calls on European cities and towns to devote one week to sustainable mobility. It starts on September 16 and ends with a Car-Free Day on September 22. Every year, EMW has a specific motto, such as clean air, multimodality or sharing economy. EMW includes traffic-related events, happenings such as cycling critical masses, temporary closures of streets for cars – opening them for pedestrians and cyclists.

It has 44 Participating countries in 2019, with total 1820 cities.

The Campaign

The EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK campaign provides the perfect opportunity to present sustainable mobility alternatives to local residents. It permits also to explain the challenges that cities and towns are facing. By taking part, towns and cities can showcase the benefits of cleaner transport choices. Its can make progress towards better mobility in Europe.

Local authorities are strongly encouraged to use the week to test new transport measures and get feedback from the public. It is also an excellent opportunity for local stakeholders to get together and discuss the different aspects of mobility and air quality. To find innovative solutions to reduce car-use and transport emissions, and test new technologies and planning measures.

European Mobility Week 2020

The European Commission launches the 18th European Mobility Week (#mobilityweek) its flagship campaign.

More than 2,800 cities in 48 countries will hold events to mark this year’s celebration, giving people the opportunity to explore the role of sustainable mobility in their daily lives and to try out clean transport modes.

European Mobility Week in Turkey

This year, 61 municipalities from Turkey are taking part in the European Mobility Week. Turkish civil society organisations are also very active and are organising actions promoting the idea of sustainable urban mobility in more than 80 cities.

The week culminates in the trademark car-free day on the 22 September.

This year’s motto is Walk with Us. It puts the spotlight on safe walking and cycling and the benefits it can have for our health, our environment, and our bank balance! Active transport modes such as walking and cycling are emission-free and help to keep our hearts and bodies healthy.

On the occasion of the start of the European Mobility Week the Head of the EU Delegation to Turkey, Ambassador Christian Berger said: “Sustainable mobility means better quality of life for citizens by promoting cleaner and more fuel-efficient transport modes, and more human-powered travel. It’s a great way of keeping the focus at the local level and helping towns and cities in Turkey to improve the environmental performance of their transport system. “

We say walk with us and experience the benefits for yourself!
